Many people feel overwhelmed and powerless to help the planet, but when restaurants take a stand to act more sustainably, they give customers the power to do so too in their everyday life. This heavily influences people’s decisions when eating out. If they’re choosing between two similar eateries but one offers sustainable dining, why wouldn’t they pick the one that saves two birds with one stone?
Making the switch to sustainable practices is therefore not only sensible for doing your part for the planet, but it also makes solid business sense. If you’re unsure of where to start, make a booking and join us at Adventure Farm and learn more about restaurant sustainability and organic farming.
Not only does restaurant sustainability mean taking part in helping the environment, but it also means giving customers the opportunity to contribute to these positive efforts. People do decide where to dine based on a business’s values these days. It maximizes their money’s mileage and makes them feel like they’re making a difference. Being sustainable is therefore more than just a fad or a nice extra: it’s a necessity for satisfying the needs of the current and future generations of diners. If you want customers to pick you over the competition, you’ve got to show that they’re paying for more than just their plate.
Ways our restaurant effectively improves its sustainability strategy:
We talk to our suppliers about cutting down the packaging they send produce in.
We use chalk board to write our menu of the day instead of printed menus.
We use biodegradable bin bags for unavoidable waste. Standard bin bags can take decades to decompose, whereas biodegradable ones can decompose in a matter of months or a couple of years at most.
We have swap out non-recyclable packaging for reusable and recyclable materials.
Ideally, we cut down our material wastage and minimize the need for recycling, but it’s often unavoidable. Make have the necessary bins to cover all the recyclable waste we produce – whether it’s tin, glass, plastic, or cardboard. We have ensured that everyone knows to separate it if needed.
In a similar vein to the last point, we have also implemented ways to prevent waste from going to waste. For example, leftover ingredients, are used in our vermiculture unit which gives us manure. We have set up a compost garden to grow our own produce. A stand-out feature of our restaurant, and a demonstration of our commitment to sustainability.
Organic agriculture can act as a driver to reach other goals of the strategy – as synthetic pesticides are not allowed in organic farming an increase of organic production can support to reach the goal of a 50% reduction of chemical pesticides as envisioned in the strategy. It is a well-established and clearly defined farming system with a proven positive environmental performance that can act as a role model for sustainable conventional farming.
How we apply new technology to improve sustainability at Adventure Farm.
We use artificial intelligence to predict and adjust the farm's water usage. Precision agriculture use artificial intelligence (AI) to aid in the detection of plant diseases, pests, and inadequate plant nutrition on farms.
We implement precision agriculture techniques. Precision agriculture utilizes technology such as sensors and drones to gather data on crop and soil conditions, allowing farmers to apply fertilizers and pesticides more efficiently, reducing waste and improving crop yields.
We implement no-till farming practices. No-till farming is a sustainable technique that involves leaving crop residue on the soil surface rather than tilling it under, which can improve soil health, reduce erosion, and decrease the need for fossil-fuel-powered equipment.
We implement smart packaging that extends shelf life. Smart packaging technology can help to reduce food waste by extending the shelf life of crops, which can also reduce transportation-related emissions
We implement agroforestry practices. Agroforestry is a sustainable farming technique that involves integrating trees with crops, providing multiple benefits such as soil conservation, water conservation, and carbon sequestration.
We implement precision livestock farming techniques. Precision livestock farming involves using technology such as sensors and data analytics to monitor livestock health, behavior, and productivity, allowing farmers to improve animal welfare, reduce waste, and improve efficiency.
We implement drip irrigation systems. Drip irrigation systems can reduce water usage by delivering water directly to plant roots, minimizing water waste and improving crop yields.
We implement integrated pest management techniques. Integrated pest management involves using a variety of sustainable techniques such as crop rotation, natural predators, and biological control agents to control pests and reduce the use of chemical pesticides.
While our sustainability efforts is making a massive contribution to the environment, we don’t need to be completely humble about it and say nothing. We have social media accounts and a website which informs our customers know what part we’re playing in helping the planet. We share updates and statistics on our progress and new initiatives in our website www.adventure.farm.co.ke
Being vocal about our steps towards sustainability, gets our customers and staff buzzing and engaged with our brand. Making a move towards sustainability isn’t an overnight process, both physically and mentally. But it’s well within our business’s interests and is doable when you make realistic, incremental changes. Our commitment to sustainability makes our restaurant stand out on the high street.
